As kids, we went to the lake each weekend. One of the usual activities was turtle hunting. This involved my Dad driving us in the fishing boat back in a channel very quietly. Then we would shut off the motor and watch for turtles to start sunning themselves. Once we spotted a good set and they were under our spell, my Dad would start up the fishing boat and we would cast our big 10′ pole with net on the end and literally ram the shore with the boat! Most of the time we ended up with a net full of turtles.
So on our summer visit to Indiana, we went back up to the lake and decided to catch a few turtles. We don’t have the old fishing boat so some catching from shore was the only solution. I had lost my touch and gave up. But some relatives that were more up to date in their turtle skills helped us out and we got two little guys!
With the Olympics starting that day, we decided to have a competition of our own. Turtle Races!
We setup a posh Olympic Village for the competitors so they had a place to hang.
Here is Reagan taking a photo with the big winner!
In the end, the turtles were released back into the wild to live freely or be caught again another day!
