Field Day 2010
First Grade means finally being able to be a part of the schools’ Field Day. Sydney is quite the budding athlete so she was so excited for the big day. Then Reagan, Kayla & I went along to cheer on our team. Reagan’s friend Claire even brought her own poster!
First off the kids all gathered in the gym for a little pre-cheer session. Here is Mrs. Young’s Sea Turtles sporting their Mommy Fuller created sea turtle apparel!
First event was the wave breaker hurdles. Everything this year had a sea theme. Here is Sydney catching some air. Syd later said this was her favorite event of the day.
Of course Sydney was also a great team cheerleader.
Next was beach ball volleyball. This one was pretty funny to watch. The kids didn’t quite get the whole “toss the ball over the net thing” The ball tended to stay on one side while the kids hit it further and further AWAY from the net. Until a teacher would grab the ball and toss it back to the other side. Still very fun!
They finished the day off with four more events covered in the video only. They pulled each other around on scooters. Picked up marbles with their toes out of a kiddie pool. Filled buckets with water by squeezing out sponges. And finally some kind of race where you dress and undress into crazy beach items.
I think the kids all had a blast. But, it definitely was not the field day I grew up on. Where’s the make the kids run until they puke event? Oh well, I think this was more fun.

Colorado Kids Race 2010
Race weekend had arrived! Sydney has run in this race for the past 2 years and was excited to return once again for another loop in City Park. We enjoy this race because its low key and easy in and out. The kids enjoy it too. Its a great atmosphere. We woke up and got down to the park. Sydney wore her iPod in the car and looked like she was all business preparing for the action to come. The forecast had called for rain but it wasn’t raining and the sun was out. Great day for a race! We got the kids registered and then they went off and visited the various booths that are setup to play games, win prizes, get snacks, face paints, and more. Finally, it was time to race.
Sydney raced in the 1/2 mile race again this year. They have a mile option but it requires some group registration and is targeted at schools mostly. These races are not timed. That’s cool but one of these days I want to get an official result. Sydney lined up in the middle of the pack and was off strong. She knew right where we were at cheering her on so we got some good smiles from her as she passed by. The 1/2 mile takes the kids out and around a cone and then back the same way. Takes them a few minutes.
Saw the lead boys coming back and then a distributed pack and Sydney was in there. She was running nice and smooth. Not looking like she was going to die or anything. Just comfortable. I was waiting near the start of the finish shoot and started yelling/cheering her on. I knew she had more speed so I got totally obnoxious this year and was telling her to win and beat those boys. I ran with the video camera along the outside and saw her to the finish line. I scooped her up and gave her a big hug. Great job, Sydney!
We take you now to the live play-by-play from both kid’s races!

I think she is ready to up it to a full mile race one of these days. She has the pacing down! Here is the slideshow from the race. Lots of good action shots in here frame by frame to see the big power stride!

Grandparents Day
Today was the big RMCA Day/Grandparents Day at the girls school. We had a special guest in town for the big event. Grandpa Coburn called the school nearly daily last winter to find out when the big event would be. He didn’t want to miss the big event yet another year.
The day started with class presentations in the auditorium. Here is the last shot of Mrs. Young’s current first graders on stage.
Next we headed up to Sydney’s classroom. Sydney showed off all her various art projects around the room. Then she sat Grandpa down in her chair to show him EVERY page she had written all year in her journal and sketchbook. I think he was quite impressed by her progress over the year.
Outside the classroom the kids had an art show for the projects recently made in art class. Here is Syd and her Sarcophagus.
We’re so happy to have been able to show off our school to Grandpa. I hope he enjoyed it as much as we did. Here’s one more shot of the gang.

Happy 7th Birthday - Continued
Now that the birthday party and sleep-over are over its time to get down to business. Because today is the actual birthday. The girls were pretty tired from the big sleep-over so we kind of took it easy in the morning. I even let Syd open one present early.
Then apparently it started to rain inside or something so the girls decided it best to watch cartoons well protected.
We always let the girls pick where they want to eat on their birthdays. This year Sydney chose the place where the gorilla runs around…Casa Bonita! It was quite a drive down there but we lucked out in that the place was almost empty. Usually it so packed you barely get to see any of the show. So good call for Sydney.
Once back at home, we all ventured outside to have some real fun. Reagan got a real nice green remote control car for her birthday. And of course its no fun to race yourself so Daddy picked out a matching blue car for Sydney. So we spent at least an hour outside watching the girls race their cars.
Then more presents.
We ended the day with Syds’ pick for dinner at Texas Roadhouse. I think she likes it because you get to sit on a saddle while they sing Happy Birthday.

Happy 7th Birthday - The Party
Can you believe our girl is 7?
This year Sydney decided she wanted a sleepover for her birthday party. Given that she is only 7, I envisioned a bedtime riddled with tears as some of the girls wanted to go home. So instead we agreed on an after school party with all the girls from school and best bud Helene. Then after the party, Madison and Helene could stay for a sleep-over. I think that was a great compromise.
So that day for school Sydney got to bring in her school birthday snack. No cupcakes for this kid. She wants Mommies homemade pumpkin muffins. That’s my kid. Then later in the day I showed up to do her last school craft with the classroom. I have been the class craft Mom this year and it was so much fun! This time we planted flowers for the kids to give their Moms for Mother’s Day. I can’t tell you how excited these kids were to have their very own surprise for Mom. It was adorable.
Then I loaded up all the girls into my car and it we headed back to the house for the party. Let me start by saying that although the girls were all so good. Seven 7 year old girls are LOUD. We started off with playtime in the backyard. I got the whole gang to pose for this picture. Unfortunately, Reagan was feeling sick so she was forced to miss much of the activities.
Next, we headed up to the back deck to do some crafts. This year we painted baseball caps with puffy fabric paints. Then we used fabric markers and cool stick on stencils to decorate our own canvas bags. Both crafts were a hit.
Here are the girls acting crazy. Did I mention it was LOUD?
After crafts the girls feasted on homemade mac-n-cheese and fruit before heading inside for the cake. For some reason, the candles kept relighting themselves. So there was a lot of blowing before Dad decided to just dunk them in water.
Here is the last pic of the whole gang. Happy to say they all looked to have had a great time. This was such a great group of girls. One more reason we love our school so much.
After the majority of girls went home we started on the sleep-over activities. First there was some good ole dress-up fun. Then the girls got on some cozy pjs and settled in to watch Barbie and the Mermaid while munching on popcorn. And I thought boys ate a lot. Then as they settled in for bed the bookworms wanted to first read some books. So we lit up our glow in the dark bracelets and read a few minutes before heading to sleep. The rest of the night was uneventful as they were all exhausted and went to bed.
Here is some video of the big event.
1st Grade Recital
Recently we got an email from the school saying it was time for kids to audition for the spring recital. I asked Sydney if she wanted to put anything together but she wasn’t interested. Ok, move on. A couple of weeks later we get another email containing the schedule for the first grade spring recital and there it was.
Maddie Sandoval and Sydney Fuller singing My Country Tis’ of Thee
So I guess her bud Maddie wanted to sing but didn’t want to go up alone. So the two agreed to a duet. Yet, this news was never passed on to me. How exciting. This was to be Syd’s first performance without the whole group. Here’s a picture of the two in action. The lighting in this place is never good so you get what you get.
After the solo performances the entire first grade got up for one more group performance. They wore little robot masks for their presentation of “Ten Little Robots.”
Of course we had video as well. But, it turns out that holding a grabby baby while filming does not a good movie make. Apparently the little bugger pushed the automatic focus off some how so I was unable to get the camera to focus. I didn’t even know video cameras had the option to turn auto focus off. So I had no idea what was going on. We decided to put up the video since you can still hear the show. Future rule #1..no holding babies while filming kids recitals.

Toothless
Sydney has had three loose tooth up on top for quite a few weeks now. So she wiggled them. And wiggled them. And wiggled them. Then finally on Sunday she wiggled the first one out.
Sunday, May 2nd…
Monday, May 3rd…
Sydney shows Mom how wiggly the neighbor tooth has now become. I ask her to let me feel the tooth. And pop! Out it comes too.
A random video when she had 1 to go…
Tuesday, May 4th…
Daddy is driving Sydney to school in the morning and of course she is wiggling her last remaining top loose tooth. And bang! Its out too.
In school the kids keep track of how many teeth are lost by each kid during the year on a tooth fairy calendar. Mrs. Young said Sydney has set a new first grade record. Three teeth lost three days in a row. I think the tooth fairy is now officially broke.
Just look at the mug on this kid.
